Renovation

Sorry it’s been so long..

This blog is going to get a new template soon.. mainly so that I’ll have put sufficient work into updating it’s look that I’ll put a proportional amount of work into writing updates!

So stay tuned. Gonna be less bulky and full of junk. A normal looking blog, can you believe it!

Al

‘The Boss’

Mikey likes to call him “Jonathan ‘The Boss’ Edwards”

I’ve been reading through 10-20 of his Resolutions each week with a student I’m hanging out with – we’ve been blowing out over a few of them. I’ll be sharing them and some thoughts over the next few weeks at the Uni Fellowship homepage www.ufcutas.org in the notes sidebar (on the front page) or at this ‘notes’ link.

I’d love you to come and explore the resolutions too!

(Thanks to John Cavanough who suggested I read them in the first place!)

Friends

I am so surprised by how many of these guys at Together for the Gospel call their books friends.. check out the Personal Study Tours, a bunch of videos of old dudes showing you through their library.. and revealing their weirdness.. very awesome.

Lasagne

Nikki and Mikey are an awesome ministry couple.

Tomorrow they will God willing have their 3rd child, which is way awesome. With that in the forefront of his mind, Mikey has been working real hard at Uni Fellowship to make sure everything is running smooth and awesome, and that the Committee is pumped, and that I’m doing ok too.

So, today the Lynchs made me Lasagne. They’re really Brilliant. Like Holidays, Airplanes and Volcanos.

Roast

In the world of all things ‘Good Hobart Coffee’ there has been some exciting stuff going down:

Papa Carlos (as man of Bult would call him) and Oomph Coffee are opening their new Roastery on Murray Street possibly as early as next week. With a Slayer coffee machine, and they’ve just employed two of my friends. Good times!

Richard and the Villino Espresso crew have begun roasting their own coffee, and have apparently settled on some blends – I’m heading in to check it out now. 3 weeks ago when I was there last they were still trialing, so I’m keen to see what they’ve come up with. Plus I want a ‘Caleb Wilson – Head Barista’ business card :-D

Dane and Island Espresso have had their own blends back for quite a while now, and they rock. I even have a favourite one. Great to know Dane is back on top of his game.

MTS have a new website!

Finally.. and it looks fantastic. Makes me want to do an apprenticeship.. Oh.. well I AM doing an apprenticeship, but maybe to start it all over again..

I think I beat Mikey to blogging about it.
Find it Here

Edit: (Yes I know I broke my blog title conventions. Sometimes it’s worth it!)

Fresher

As a new MTS apprentice, Dan had this awesome welcome to the freshers at our weekly MTS training meeting on Thursday:

“..so in a moment, we’re gonna take you out and flush your head down the toilet”

What followed was an awesome discussion of expectations in ministry relating to work and rest, wives (or husbands), ‘ministry guilt’, and personal organisation. I had to leave early, but I’m looking forward to next week.

fauxconomics

A very odd trait of mine, is being economic with space or resources, often extending beyond what is logical or functional.

  • I like to fill up pages with scribbled notes before throwing them out, even if it means I have to draw squares around my notes to distinguish them from each other, and often I lose what I was writing.
  • I like to use as many of my coins as possible in one transaction, even if it means I’m standing on the bus/at the checkout fiddling with coins.
  • I like to fit as much as I can into a box/bag as squarely and neatly as possible, often pulling it all out to try to get more in. Although this may be economic use of space, usually it will render the bag or box too heavy, or it’ll just break.
  • I will measure my time and what I have to do according to the time I have left, not according to the time it will take me to do what I want to do. This will mean that I try to fit as much into as little time as possible. I am often left at the end of a week with much less time to do things, because I like to double check that I am being most efficient with my time, and this takes time to work out.

What is a funny trait that you have that just seems so natural to you, but is in fact totally ridiculous?

Twenty

I think the Crossroads TwentyTwenty conference brochures look awesome.
I keep one in my notebook so I am reminded that things are allowed to look awesome in ministry.

If you go to Crossroads, which I don’t (but anyway), I reckon you are obligated to attend the conference on account of the awesome brochure. I think Mike Jolly would agree with me.

Meeting

I really like our staff meetings. We had our first full one today.

Staff meetings are normally just dry and boring and bla bla.. but I really enjoy Uni Fellowship ones.

Mikey seems to like things to be clear – and will put things out there for future need. Forward thinking, smooth flowing and efficient. Mikey will be nice about letting you know what you’re saying is not relevant or daggy.

Sam Green likes to be pragmatic and practical – clarifying things as a task to do. Sam takes notes in his diary because that’s a practical thing to do.

Luke Hansard likes to be understanding and loving – he makes encouraging comments and asks you how you feel about not having a girlfriend. Luke also gets excited. It makes me feel excited too.

I look forward to next week.
