Roast

In the world of all things ‘Good Hobart Coffee’ there has been some exciting stuff going down:

Papa Carlos (as man of Bult would call him) and Oomph Coffee are opening their new Roastery on Murray Street possibly as early as next week. With a Slayer coffee machine, and they’ve just employed two of my friends. Good times!

Richard and the Villino Espresso crew have begun roasting their own coffee, and have apparently settled on some blends – I’m heading in to check it out now. 3 weeks ago when I was there last they were still trialing, so I’m keen to see what they’ve come up with. Plus I want a ‘Caleb Wilson – Head Barista’ business card :-D

Dane and Island Espresso have had their own blends back for quite a while now, and they rock. I even have a favourite one. Great to know Dane is back on top of his game.

Rest

My day of rest usually consists of a nice slow morning with a decent breakfast and plunger coffee. Then around 11:00 I head out for a coffee at one of my favourite cafes with a good book or a writing pad. In the afternoon I like to cook something enjoyable to eat later in the week, and then I go off to indoor soccer or around to my Mum’s place for dinner.

How about you? What do you do on your day(s) off?

Finally.. and it looks fantastic. Makes me want to do an apprenticeship.. Oh.. well I AM doing an apprenticeship, but maybe to start it all over again..

I think I beat Mikey to blogging about it.

Edit: (Yes I know I broke my blog title conventions. Sometimes it’s worth it!)

Fresher

As a new MTS apprentice, Dan had this awesome welcome to the freshers at our weekly MTS training meeting on Thursday:

“..so in a moment, we’re gonna take you out and flush your head down the toilet”

What followed was an awesome discussion of expectations in ministry relating to work and rest, wives (or husbands), ‘ministry guilt’, and personal organisation. I had to leave early, but I’m looking forward to next week.

Hat

Mikey is the Hat Man.
Not in the “I have lots of vintage baseball caps” kind of way. Neither in the “Luke Hansard wears a special hat to cover his head” kind of way.

But in a Geneva/MTS/Uni Fellowship/Vision 100 kind of way.
He wore at least 3 hats today, and still managed to keep them on.

I was impressed, so this makes Mikey the Hat Man.

Jeremiah

I’m starting to work through Jeremiah – the book, and the man and how he related to God, just intrigues me.

Can anyone recommend any resources they found helpful, or any commentaries that were excellent for studying with?

fauxconomics

2010

A very odd trait of mine, is being economic with space or resources, often extending beyond what is logical or functional.

  • I like to fill up pages with scribbled notes before throwing them out, even if it means I have to draw squares around my notes to distinguish them from each other, and often I lose what I was writing.
  • I like to use as many of my coins as possible in one transaction, even if it means I’m standing on the bus/at the checkout fiddling with coins.
  • I like to fit as much as I can into a box/bag as squarely and neatly as possible, often pulling it all out to try to get more in. Although this may be economic use of space, usually it will render the bag or box too heavy, or it’ll just break.
  • I will measure my time and what I have to do according to the time I have left, not according to the time it will take me to do what I want to do. This will mean that I try to fit as much into as little time as possible. I am often left at the end of a week with much less time to do things, because I like to double check that I am being most efficient with my time, and this takes time to work out.

What is a funny trait that you have that just seems so natural to you, but is in fact totally ridiculous?

Plan

A random quote from Matt Chandler that I like.

“If your understanding of the person and work of the Holy spirit doesn’t involve or include planning.. then.. then you’re dumb. I don’t know how to say that more sensitively or politely.. let’s be charitable, that would be a concerning ignorance.. and dumb.

The Holy Spirit is no less present in planning, and I think to be effective spontaneously, to be effective in the moment, the ‘moment’, you are dependant on previous preparation. I think through preparation then, your heart is at rest, at peace and prepared to discern the spontaneous. I think you’re much more vulnerable if you don’t plan or prepare, and I think it’ll become evident to people that you’re making it up as you go along. So, we should not make an adversary relationship between planning and the active work of the spirit in the moment during the sunday celebration. They work together, there is a relationship with each other.”

Today I seem to have begun blogging like Mikey. It seems to have happened by accidentally copying Jason’s one word blog title concept. Hopefully it will be good, rather than a thumbs down.

Twenty

I think the Crossroads TwentyTwenty conference brochures look awesome.
I keep one in my notebook so I am reminded that things are allowed to look awesome in ministry.

If you go to Crossroads, which I don’t (but anyway), I reckon you are obligated to attend the conference on account of the awesome brochure. I think Mike Jolly would agree with me.
